Sunscreen Saves Lives

Millions of Floridians and visitors to the Sunshine State rely on high SPF sunscreen. Decades of science back up their safe and effective use. We believe the best sun protection is the one that consumers will use.

Access to High SPF is at Risk

Questionable studies and a media frenzy have led to recently proposed bans on certain  sunscreen ingredients. If we were to ban some of the most effective filters in sunscreen, up to 70% of sunscreen products could be removed from the shelves. Florida is being forced into a false choice between protecting human health and protecting coral  reefs.  We  can  do  both.

NOT ALL SUNSCREENS ARE EQUAL

Oxybenzone, an ingredient required for high SPF formulations in the U.S., plays a critical role in absorbing UVA and UVB rays.

DID YOU KNOW

There is no credible, scientific evidence that oxybenzone negatively affects human or environmental health – including coral reefs.

SAFELY USED FOR DECADES

Real world use by patients, families, and many consumers show oxybenzone is safe. It is one of the most studied sunscreen ingredients available.

DID YOU KNOW

Experts agree: Coral bleaching is due to global warming, ocean acidification and unsustainable fishing practices – not sunscreen ingredients.

MOST SKIN CANCER IS PREVENTABLE

4 out of 5 cases of skin cancer are preventable – but about 9,500 Americans per day, or 3.5 million per year, are still diagnosed with skin cancer. Sunscreen can help!

Protect Public Health

Sunscreen is a critical part of staying safe in the sun and preventing skin cancer. Make a difference in your area of impact.

Sun Safe Florida is Part of the Solution

We are a coalition of local and state dermatologists, scientists, health-related groups, business organizations, skin cancer survivors, and tourism-related businesses who are educating Florida on the importance and safety of high SPF  sunscreen.

Our work engages  Floridians, our policymakers, and media on what scientific consensus and decades of evidence show: sunscreen ingredients such as oxybenzone are beneficial for human use and pose no risk to the environment (including coral reefs).
